We had explored options to be in Spain for the eclipse, but that didn’t work out. I’d pretty much written it off until I realised fairly late that we were going to get around 93% coverage here in South Wales.

So I headed to Rest Bay, along with what felt like half of Wales.

There was something about the experience that reminded me of photographing Iftar. Obviously very different events, but I felt a similar sense of connection with the people around me. So many of the shared experiences that bring people together now are things we pay for, consume, or that are somehow exclusive. This was none of those things. We were all just there because of something natural, ancient and completely outside of our everyday lives.

In the end, that sense of shared experience was probably more interesting to me than the eclipse itself.
